In 1783, settlers crossed the Appalachian Mountains moving west and settled down founding the town of Dandridge, Tennessee.  It sits on the banks of the French Broad River and is located in Jefferson County.  Dandridge saw a significant amount growth until the building of the railroad from Knoxville to Virginia in 1856.  The railroad was constructed north of Dandridge through New Market and Mossy Creek.  This significantly reduced the amount of growth Dandridge saw.  Downtown Dandridge is now considered a National Historic District.

Dandridge offers many different options for places to go whether you are looking for historic or new sites.  The courthouse, originally completed in 1845, now houses a free museum that contains historic artifacts from all over Jefferson County.  The original taverns have been converted to different office buildings.  The drug store still has an original soda fountain and behind this is the old Revolutionary Graveyard.  The lake also has a new full service marina, restaurant, and lodging.
